REVIEW: ChowDown 2nd Birthday with Jacques Greene & Rich Reason 13/03/2013

Jacques Greene

ChowDown, one of Manchester’s finest grime and house club nights had its second birthday last night, and they celebrated in style.

The night kicked off at 10pm but Mint Lounge was already packed out by 11pm to the sounds of the ChowDown residents, Pauper and Gumbleton back2back. What a way to warm up the night.

Also playing on the night was Manchester’s own, Rich Reason who has been hosting Hit & Run since 2006 as well as earning the title of City Life’s DJ of the year in 2011. Rich knew how to warm up the crowd perfectly before the main event, Jacques Greene, but what impressed me most with his set was his impressive ability to play a live performance on an electric drum instrument (see video below).

Canadian Producer Jacques Greene (Vase/Lucky Me/3024) was last seen in Manchester at The Warehouse Project in the autumn. But playing to a 2,000 capacity warehouse must be quite different to the small, underground location he played at Mint Lounge. Greene has been a big name in house music since he released his debut EP, The Look in 2010 and he didn’t disappoint on the night. In his 2 hour set, Greene thrilled the crowd by playing Prism and The Look (Kingdom edit), but surprisingly Another Girl – possibly his most notable track -wasn’t on his set list. Greene finished his explosive set with Pyramids – Frank Ocean followed by Climax – Usher – a personal highlight of mine.

Last to play on the night was FINN who ended the night perfectly with Justin Timberlake’s, Cry Me a River (see video below).

It might only be their second birthday, but expect big things from ChowDown in the future – they certainly know how to throw a party.
